This coming-of-age series follows a Swedish prince exploring his sexuality at a boarding school. Young Royals, which just arrived on the streaming platform, is a juicy teen drama with a royal twist and takes place in modern-day Sweden.
Here’s the full synopsis, from Netflix: “When Prince Wilhelm (Edvin Ryding) arrives at the prestigious boarding school Hillerska he finally gets an opportunity to explore his true self and find out what kind of life he really wants. Wilhelm starts dreaming of a future filled with freedom and unconditional love far away from the royal obligations – but when he unexpectedly becomes next in line for the throne his dilemma is heightened as he has to make a choice. Love or duty.”
Young Royals has cast actors who actually look the age they’re supposed to be playing. Characters like Prince Wilhelm don’t have clear skin or perfect hair, and no one in the cast is overly attractive in the way that teens shows almost exclusively like to portray.
Created by Lisa Ambjörn, Lars Beckung and Camilla Holter, Young Royals is a gripping coming-of-age drama, even if it contains some of the usual tropes found in teen series about elite schools, at its core it is a great LGBTQAI+ romance.
