The artist Liviu Bulea, in collaboration with the cultural organization ATOPOS cvc, created new works -propaganda posters- for Athens Pride Week, which refer to the aesthetic iconography of the communist regimes.
“Homoerotic Revolution is the third event of the #RevoltingBodies project. With this event, ATOPOS also participates in Athens Pride Week 2021.
The Romanian artist Liviu Bulea has created a series of new works, referring to a certain type of aesthetic iconography found in communists regimes around the world. The images that the artist uses as primary sources appear mainly in Soviet and Maoist propaganda material in the second half of the 20th century. They present a special mode of masculinity that create a fantasy of the ideal revolutionary as he is transformed into a titan that is portraying either workers or politicians. In recent years there has been an interesting approach to this iconography, in which underlying homoeroticism is pointed out. Inspired by this approach, Bulea presents a body of work consisting of original creations and reproductions of existing propaganda posters. Through his visual language, the artist emphasizes the erotic dimension of this aesthetic and a desire for the body as a revolutionary model of masculinity.” – Revolting Bodies Project

ABOUT ATOPOS & REVOLTING BODIES
ATOPOS cvc is a non-profit, cultural organisation interested in the expression and adornment of the human body. It was founded in 2003 by Stamos Fafalios and Vassilis Zidianakis. With their varying backgrounds in art, architecture, fashion and anthropology, the two merged their interests to create an interdisciplinary platform for the arts.
On the occasion of the celebrations of the 200 years of the Greek revolution, the artistic director of ATOPOS, Vassilis Zidianakis has invited the artist, historian and researcher Alexis Fidetzis to edit the ongoing hybrid project #RevoltingBodies, in the program of #RevoltingBodiesA21. Actions, reports and discussions will problematize the concept of revolution and diagnose the ways in which revolutionary fantasy is imposed on human bodies. In this context, a series of new projects were created.
