“The 9” Weekly News Snapshots: Christmas in July and a queer pet detective

As usual every Tuesday… a weekly spotlight with Jude Jones & staff.  In week’s 9 news, the patriarch of music retired, queer finding pets, and then:

SWEDEN. MUSIC. ELTON JOHN LAST CONCERT.

Elton John’s last concert was in Stockholm, Sweden, on Saturday 8th of July 2023. The patriarch of pop music sang live for the last time. You can read the profile on Elton John written by Ciprian Ciobanu.

UK. POLITICS. BAT CRAZY.

Britain going all bat crazy. Thankfully, there are intelligent individuals within that country. The Court of Appeal declared Britain’s plan to deport certain LGBT+ asylum seekers to Rwanda as unlawful on Thursday, providing a sense of relief for LGBT+ rights groups. These organizations had previously criticized the proposals as unsafe.

NEPAL. POLITICS. SURPRIZING GAY MARRIAGE.

In an astonishing move, Nepal moved better than some European countries. Same-sex couples in Nepal said on Friday that they were preparing to register their marriages after the Supreme Court issued a temporary order clearing the way for gay marriage for the first time in the largely conservative country.

AFGHANISTAN. LIFESTYLE. DEFYING DEATH.

In Kabul, a queer couple decided to marry despite the death penalty. The Sunni Muslim men found a mullah who performed a short version of the ceremony. “We wanted to make a statement, not looking for something official.”, the couple said. They fled to the UK immediately after and arrived safely with their friends. For the reason you can imagine, we cannot give more details. Photography was taken and we saw them.

USA. LIFESTYLE. XMAS IN JULY.

There is no groovier way to spend Xmas in July than with Cher and that is exactly what happened. The artist launched her Christmas album ever. We knew that we would start to celebrate winter in summer.

NETFLIX. MOVIE. SEX EDUCATION.

Netflix has dropped a teaser trailer showing the first footage of the fourth and unfortunately final season of Sex Education, the series in which Otis gives sex tips to his fellow students. September 21 is the day.

ROMANIA. PETS. QUEER SAVING PETS.

Marian Petcu ended up in the Romanian newspapers for an unusual hobby that become a business. Like Ace Ventura, he is a pet detective. And he is queer. He finds lost pets. Queer detective finding pets. So cool!

RUSSIA. RIGHTS. MENTAL HEALTH OF THE GOVERNMENT.

Not surprised, but somehow astonished by how imaginative and evil people can be.Russian sexologists to target homosexuality and other ‘disorders’ under new rules. Even science does not support that…

FINLAND. CELEBRITY. GLEN CLOSE AT PRIDE.

We do love her and it seems like she loves us. Glenn Close continues to highlight rainbow-related in social media. This weekend she visited Helsinki Pride and now the actress celebrates Finnish openness.
